Nepal finally gets its own Supercomputer
Finally Nepal has got its own super computer. Kathmandu university has installed the first super computer in the country at IT park, Banepa. The supercomputer - which consist of high performance computing (HPC) server. It was donated by CERN based in Switzerland.
The supercomputer has capacity to solve computing task in two hours. Before it used to take 10 days to solve the same problem.
The supercomputer has following features:
- CPU server - 184
- Disk server - 16
- Network server - 12
- total processor count - 2500
- Memory - 8TB
- Power required - 200KV (installed transformer @ IT park 300KV)
Currently the supercomputer will be used for training and workshop. The university plan to operate supercomputer within 6 months.
- Backup data center of government data.
- Metrological forecasting
- Used for research activities of students of different university of Nepal.
Before CERN has used the supercomputer for two years. Hardware has limited life expectancy. It requires proper maintenance. CERN used supercomputer for experiments regarding Big bang theory
Digitally developed country donate used supercomputer to Asia and Africa countries.
